Announcing the Jane Austen Book Club!

I’m experimenting with running my own book club – this is NOT affilated with Sacramento Public Library. To get updates, follow me on Facebook at Jane Austen Book Club Pt 1, or email me at sessarego1@gmail.com and request to be added to my group contacts list.

Our first book is Northanger Abbey, and we are discussing it over two months. In September, we’ll share our first impressions of the book and I’ll give a lot of background. We’ll also have STORY TIME with a terrifying reading from The Mysteries of Uldofo, the book that so terrifies the heorine of Northanger Abbey! In October, we’ll do a more traditional book club discussion.

August Poem

Mary Oliver (1935-2019) was an American poet whose poetry focused on the natural world and our relationship to it. She spent most of her life in Ohio and in New England.

August, by Mary Oliver

When the blackberries hang
swollen in the woods, in the brambles
nobody owns, I spend

all day among the high
branches, reaching
my ripped arms, thinking

of nothing, cramming
the black honey of summer
into my mouth; all day my body

accepts what it is. In the dark
creeks that run by there is
this thick paw of my life darting among

the black bells, the leaves; there is
this happy tongue.
